What is Hokaku?
Hokaku (捕獲, Japanese for "capture") is a native macOS menu-bar app for taking screenshots and marking them up — arrows, shapes, highlights, text, and redaction — then copying or saving them.
Does Hokaku require an account?
No. There's nothing to sign up for. Install it, grant Screen Recording access once, and start capturing — no login, ever.
What can it capture?
An interactive region you drag out (⇧⌘4), the frontmost window (⇧⌘5), or the entire screen (⇧⌘3) — all at full native resolution in Display P3 using Apple's ScreenCaptureKit. There's also a timed region capture (⌥⇧⌘4): pick an area and a countdown runs while the overlay goes click-through, so you can open a menu or dropdown and have it captured with that transient UI still on screen.
Can I get back to a capture I just took?
Yes. A recents drawer beside Save keeps your last 10 shots — click a thumbnail to reopen it in the editor, or remove ones you don't need. You can also reopen the editor at any time from the menu bar with ⇧⌘E (Open Editor), without taking a new shot.
Which annotation tools are included?
A filled arrow, straight line, rectangle, rounded rectangle, oval, highlighter, text, pixelate and blur redaction, and crop. Every mark can be selected, moved, resized, recolored, and undone.
How do I get my screenshot out?
Copy it straight to the clipboard with ⌘C, or save it as a P3-tagged PNG with ⌘S. From there, paste or drop it wherever you need it.
Why does it need Screen Recording permission?
Capturing your screen requires macOS's Screen Recording entitlement (System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Screen & System Audio Recording). Grant it on first capture and relaunch once — because Hokaku is signed with a stable Developer ID, the grant then persists across updates.
Is my data private?
Yes. Everything happens on your Mac. Hokaku has no server, no account, and no analytics. Your screenshots never leave the machine unless you copy or save them yourself. See the Privacy Policy for the full details.
Why isn't this on the Mac App Store?
Native screen capture needs Screen Recording access that the App Sandbox doesn't allow. Hokaku is signed and notarized directly with Apple using a Developer ID certificate and distributed as a direct download instead.
What does it require?
A Mac running macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later. The Liquid Glass styling activates on macOS 26, with material fallbacks on 14–15.
